Too many people these days are spending more time on the internet looking for the tattoo they want, rather than looking for the right artist.
Just because every town has a tattoo shop or two these days, does not mean that you can just walk into any business and get a good tattoo.
The sad fact is that in most areas, there are no real requirements to open a shop other than signing a lease and passing a basic health inspection. Owning, or working out of a shop is no promise that a person is any good at tattooing. In fact, often when someone isn't good enough to get a job in a respectable shop, they will just open up their own.
Furthermore, contrary to popular belief, small tattoos are actually pretty hard to do well. There's no room for mistakes on a small tattoo, and any little hiccup will show. So even if all you want is a little tattoo, you really do need to make sure you're getting tattooed by someone who is good.
As wonderful as the internet is, people think that they can do everything for themselves now. It's great that people can search for anything, but most people search for the wrong things when they're looking for tattoos.
The biggest problem is that people are actually looking for tattoos, rather than just looking for inspiration.
If you want a flower tattoo, just look for the type of flower you like and just leave off the word "tattoo" from the search.
The problem with doing searches for tattoos is that you're looking at other peoples tattoos. Not only is it bad form to copy someones tattoo, but most of the time the tattoos you find are going to be really bad to begin with.
Any tattoo artist worth going to will be able to take your idea and turn it into a good tattoo without the help of a shitty picture from pinterest. The best thing is to show up with an idea, and maybe a couple reference pictures (but not something that you want to copy) and let the artist do what we do for a living.
You'll be surprised what a good tattoo artist can do with just a little bit of free rein with your idea.
